Our Town

Wausau, Wisconsin…

Gateway to the Northwoods… the name in Chippewa means "Far Away Place". Nestled at the foot of Rib Mountain, with its world class ski resort, and on the banks of Lake Wausau, where the Wisconsin and the Rib Rivers meet, the city is home to a thriving downtown arts community. Anchored by the newly renovated Grand Theater Arts Block, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the Wausau Center Mall, the quaint interior space of Washington Square, the prestigious new Jefferson Street Inn, and the Historic River District stores along Scott and Third Streets, the downtown has become a haven for artists, musicians, craftsmen and specialty shops like The Northwoods Goldsmith. Check out our cool Northwoods links, take a day or two off, come Up North, and drop in for a visit!

A festival crowd gathers as hot air balloons illuminate Downtown Wausau's City Square. The Grand Theater Arts Block, music pubs, upscale dining and unique shops have turned the city's Historic River District into an artists' mecca.

Wausau sits at the foot of Rib Mountain State Park, whose Granite Peak Ski Area boasts luxury amenities and the Midwest's highest vertical slope… and on the banks of Lake Wausau, where you'll find some of Wisconsin's best musky and walleye fishing.

The always free Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, with its internationally renowned Birds In Art exhibit, draws art lovers and bird watchers from around the world.
